Oslo Camerata was established in 1998, and is now "Ensemble in residence" at the renowned Barratt Due Institute of Music in
Oslo. The orchestra consists of professional musicians - however, selected young talents from he Institute are given the opportunity
to take part in the orchestra's projects.
In recent years the OSLO CAMERATA has enjoyed great success on festivals and tours throughout Europe, India and Brazil. Everywhere
the "freshness" of their sound draws an enthusiastic response from audiences and critics. Their repertoire spans from baroque
to contemporary music, commissioning works from both young and established composers.
The orchestra has its own concert series at the Old Masonic Lodge in Oslo from Grieg's time. Here they create an arena where
young musicians meet established artists and international soloists, presenting new and unknown music as well as classical
repertoire. The artists present the program with their own comments - "Talk & Play!", and the winner of OC's yearly Soloist
Competition is presented.
From the very beginning OC has worked with artists such as Truls Mørk, Julian Rachlin, Mischa Maisky. Henning Kraggerud, Arve
Tellefsen, Ole Edvard Antonsen, Juhani Lagerspetz, Christian Lindberg, Randi Stene and Per Arne Glorvigen.
Recordings
In 2006 a CD with the complete music for strings by Edvard Grieg, was released on the Naxos International label. The recording received brilliant reviews in Norway as well as internationally.
Oslo Camerata has continued their collaboration with Naxos and in 2008 they recorded again for this label two violin concertos by Louis Spohr, with soloists Henning Kraggerud and Øyvind Bjorå (released February 2010). Further, in August 2009 OC recorded Grieg String Quartets arranged for orchestra, and "Rendezvous" by Norwegian composer Arne Nordheim, to be released 2011.
Brazil - music programme in favelas
Oslo Camerata has since 2008 been involved in a music project for children and youth in favelas in Niteroi, Brazil. The project implies involvement in Projeto Aprendiz where members of OC teach students and teachers, strengthening ensembles, support with instruments and equipment, and help building a Music Library. This work is supported by The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
