The Barratt Due string orchestra for children is an option for those who are advanced in their instrumental development. The conductor carefully selects music and tasks in order to give each member a challenge, according to their level of experience. Even at this level, a well-planned mixture of practise and performance forms the basis of the teaching programme. Publicly announced concerts, both for private and corporate audiences, form important milestones for the weekly practices, and provide excellent performing experience.
The Orchestra is part of the Music School Department at the Barratt Due Institute and its conductor is Torfinn Hoffart. The term fee is currently 2000 NOK (4000 NOK/year). Practices are normally held on Saturdays from 10am to 12pm, but there may be extra practices in addition. Membership in the Orchestra assumes that the pupil can prioritise the two or three concerts per term that the Orchestra performs.
The Orchestra has enjoyed great success in the Old Masonic Lodge of Oslo and at the contemporary Ultima Festival, and has also recently joined forces with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. Annually at the Oslo Cathedral, the Children's String Orchestra plays a vital role in The Baratt Due Christmas Concert.
